Discover the rich history of Cairo’s Coptic Quarter on an inspiring tour, where you’ll explore ancient churches, unique museums, and iconic religious sites in an atmosphere filled with culture, spirituality, and timeless architecture.
We will meet you at your hotel for a tour of Cairo’s Coptic Quarter, where we will learn about the history of Christianity in Egypt and discover the differences between Coptic Catholics and Coptic Orthodox Christians. Each denomination has its own temple, and we will visit both during our tour.
First, we will visit the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, known as the Hanging Church in Cairo—built over the ancient gates of the Citadel of Babylon. Inside the temple itself, we will see various works of art and a variety of mosaics dating back to different historical eras.
We will continue our tour with visits to the Church of Saint George, the Orthodox Church, and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, where legend says the Holy Family hid after fleeing King Herod.
To complete our knowledge of Cairo’s Coptic heritage, we will visit the Coptic Museum in Cairo, which houses a wide collection of sacred and decorative objects in its permanent exhibition, most notably the Nag Hammadi manuscripts. These papyri are known as the “Gospel of Judas,” documents that have sparked considerable debate among theologians over the years.
After the visit, we will have lunch at a traditional restaurant in the museum. We will then return to our hotel.
