A day trip to the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo takes you on a magical tour of the greatest Ptolemaic temples in Upper Egypt, combining history and fantasy on the banks of the Nile.
After being picked up from your hotel in Luxor, you’ll leave the city behind and follow the Nile River south toward Upper Egypt.
Edfu will be the first stop on your guided tour of these ancient temples, where you’ll visit the Temple of Horus. Do you know the myths surrounding this falcon-headed god? You’ll uncover some fascinating stories about him through the inscriptions carved on the temple’s columns. The hieroglyphs, which you can try to decipher, not only depict scenes of the mythical struggle between Horus and Set but also provide information on how the temple was built.
After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant in Edfu, you’ll continue your journey to Kom Ombo. Here, on the east bank of the Nile, you’ll visit a unique temple, unusual among Egyptian shrines because it’s dedicated to two different gods: Sobek and Horus. Inside the temple, you’ll be amazed by the stunning hypostyle hall, which makes you feel as if you’re entering a forest of intricately carved columns. Next to the temple, you’ll find the Crocodile Museum, which displays mummified reptiles, which were considered sacred in ancient Egypt, in its permanent exhibition. After your guided tour, you’ll be transferred back to Luxor.
