Discover the beauty and culture of Alexandria in one day, between the sea and historical landmarks. This enjoyable tour gives you the opportunity to see the most famous monuments, stroll along the Corniche, and experience the restaurants and cafes of the Bride of the Mediterranean.
We’ll depart from Cairo for Alexandria, Egypt’s most important city on the Mediterranean coast.
We’ll begin our tour in the port of Alexandria with a visit to the Citadel of Qaitbay. This defensive complex was built in the 15th century by Sultan Qaitbay, where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. The lighthouse was destroyed by several earthquakes, and its remains were used to build the citadel.
We’ll then head to the Catacombs of Kom el-Shuqafa, where bas-reliefs reveal the fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman cultures. We’ll see its three different levels and explore its passages, tunnels, and galleries, along which burial chambers are arranged. Near these catacombs is Pompey’s Pillar, the site of the temple of the Greco-Egyptian god Serapis.
We’ll then enjoy lunch in the heart of Alexandria, with a menu including fish and seafood rice.
In the evening, we’ll visit one of the city’s most important modern buildings: the New Library of Alexandria. It was built in honor of the ancient library, which was built in the third century BC and burned, possibly during the Roman Civil War in 48 BC. It housed thousands of papyrus manuscripts and was one of the centers of learning and knowledge in the ancient world.
Finally, in the late evening, we will return to our hotel in Cairo.
